Lucy Hopkins graduated from university with a degree in Fine Art, lived and worked in London for a few years, then moved to Paris. There she trained in corporal mime, spent a year at the Jacques Lecoq school and two years studying under Philippe Gaulier, who told her she was boring and looked like a sausage.
Lucy toured France looking for love as one of a trio of clowns (Les Femmes En Voyage), directed clown trio The Gazpacho Brothers, travelled to Georgia to do her own mask-making workshops with children, performed with Parisian improvisation troupe Zarbi & Orbi, worked in France, Denmark and Sweden on Kristian Husted’s Thomas Iratus, and as assistant Mary wreaked havoc alongside British variety legend Charlie Chuck in his 2012 creation Cirque de Chuck.
In 2011, Lucy set out to create a solo show, and working closely with Carlo Jacucci created her first solo production Impossible N’est Pas Français or There’s No Such Word As Can’t, which went on to win the Prague Fringe Festival Inspiration Award 2011.
Seeds from this first solo endeavour sprouted Lucy’s second solo production Le Foulard, opening at the Prague Fringe Festival 2012 where it won the Prague Fringe Creative Award, followed by Bedfringe Pick of the Fest 2012 and awards for Best Theatre Performer and Best Theatre at Adelaide Fringe 2013. Le Foulard has toured extensively with performances in Paris, Prague, Exeter, Bedford, Oslo, Barcelona, London (The Pleasance, Soho Theatre), Perth (The Blue Room), Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane (Brisbane Powerhouse) and Edinburgh (The Pleasance) to enthusiastic response and critical acclaim.
In 2014, on a residency at Théâtre Interface(Switzerland) and in collaboration with Paul Patin, Lucy translated and adapted Le Foulard into French, and Le Full Art was born. In April 2015 Le Full Art was performed to fantastic response from audiences and critics alike at Théâtre Interface in Sion, Switzerland, and to Lucy’s immense delight will be performed at Théâtre de l’Arrache Coeur as part of the Avignon OFF Festival in July 2015.
Lucy collaborates with companies and artists across Europe as performer, writer, outside-eye and workshop leader. Her list of collaborators includes Spymonkey (UK), Babakas (UK), Compagnie Interface (Switzerland), Chapeau Nomade (France), Entre Escombros (Spain), Cheekydinner (UK), Katie O’Brien (UK) and Spencer Jones (UK).
Lucy is based in London, England.
